When one decides on purchasing a new car, there is the irrational fear of being driven to an impulse buy by an overtly-attached car salesperson. While that fear is unfounded, there are ways to make the best of your first car buy by putting in some ‘deal testers’.
These questions are assembled to help you get through the car purchase process without any sales diversion tactics. They are basically ‘How much do I pay for an exit?’ kind of questions that are neither ambiguous nor too harsh. York Dodge has put together 5 simple idea testers for finalizing your car deal!
1. Ask About the Fees Involved with The Car Buy
The question is a direct but cordial way of stating you would like to know a cost breakdown of the entire purchase process. That way, the salesperson understands you are done negotiating the car’s price & more invested in the related fees. Registry fees, sales tax, & documentation fees are the ones expected, but if you feel you are being offered too high a price, best to insist on a costs & fees breakdown. The tactic also clarifies that you are an invested customer, so the salesperson won’t pull tricks on you to add a feature you don’t need.
2. Focus Particularly on The Documentation Fees
The fee value varies from $100 in regulated states and around $600-700 and above in unregulated states. This is the cost of filling the registration & ownership forms when a deal is finalized. These fees are non-negotiable standards, so you have better luck with bargaining over the car’s price than you have over the documentation fee.
3. Inquire About Dealer-Installed Options
Many new cars are retrofitted with bespoke options at the time of their manufacture & assembly before they are shipped off to a dealership. The dealer then adds their features, commonly known as dealership add-ons. They increase the price markup but come as advantageous features, such as nitrogen-filled tires to counteract tire heat up, tinted windows to guard against the harmful UV rays, and wheel locks. Another popular feature is the anti-theft & locating software that makes it easy to track stolen vehicles. It’s assumed to be a standard manufactured feature but is a dealership thing.
While we are not discouraging you from investing in add-ons, knowing what the dealership has added on to your car can help you decide which ones you want to keep. On that basis, you might make some savings on the car buy!
4. I Know It’s New, But Can I Check the Mileage?
Usually, that question is reserved for a used car buy, but you should inquire about this with new cars. An ideal new car should have no more than 10 miles on the odo because of the test drives, but you might find one with approximately 100 miles. If that is the case, it could have been driven over from another affiliated dealership. But if you find one with 300 miles or so, then either the car is faulted, misused, or just not popular; reconsider your choice.
The question is also crucial for online car buyers as they can’t visit the dealership and require transparency in car details to make good on their investment. No one wants to invest in a faulty or over-driven new car!
5. Can They Deliver the Car to Your Address?
If you want to avoid the aggressive sales pitches, you can just carry out your buy online and drop in the ‘I’d like to have it delivered to my home/office’. It’s not only convenient, but it saves your time, and all you have to deal with is a dealership representative. And if you want any alterations to your contract terms, you can just call the dealership’s financial manager & dictate your new terms. Buying a new car has never been that easy!
